This week, many in our industry will gather in Montreal for the 2008 CAMA Expo and Trade Show. No doubt there will be a lot of conversations surrounding the current economic climate.
Vending is suffering through a spring of uncertainty. It began with the continued legislative interference in many provinces, this time under the guise of trans fat removal. But the political message was clear – the machines were the targets once again.
Following on the heels of that was the message that energy prices were not going to stabilize this year. Gas prices are reaching record levels on a weekly basis. Speculation is rampant that a big part of it is collusion at the pumps, given that there is no real shortage of oil – only a manufactured perception by the powers that be. Truth is, no matter what the status is of oil reserves; consumers have been duly conditioned to expect at least $1.40/litre this summer.
And now, plastic bottles have become the next great evil thanks to Health Canada. Must have been a slow day at the analysis lab when they determined that a chemical used in the processing of plastic could now be declared hazardous to our health.
Apparently, so could reading the headlines …
