On June 23rd, American craft brewer Lagunitas, a brew company under the Heineken umbrella, announced that it will sell a THC-infused sparkling water.
The Hi-Fi Hops’ brewer stated that their beverage is “IPA-inspired,” in that the sparkling water is flavoured with hops. Although this new product is technically water, it does have a kick and is strictly for adult consumption.
“We often dream of hops and their cannabis cousin partying together at their family reunion and wanted to bring this party to life in a drink,” said Jeremy Marshall, Lagunitas brewmaster, in a press release. “We believe it’s high time that good beer inspired a provocative yet refreshing tasting non-alcoholic alternative – bubbly, aromatic, bitter, fruity and herbaceous with no gluten, no carbohydrates and a smidge of California sun-grown cannabis in every sip.”
THC is the active ingredient in cannabis, known as tetrahydrocannabidinol. To date, cannabis is slated be legalized in Canada as of October 2018, but edible cannabis products and drinks may have to wait longer for legislation to allow for psychedelic beverages and snacks. Hi-Fi Hops is not yet available in Canada, and is tentatively slated for sale when Canada legalizes marijuana and its by-products.
Molson Coors has been in negotiation with several Cannabis-based marijuana companies to infuse some revenue into their flagging beer sales with pot-based beverages.
