The Rec Room to open in St. John's
St. John’s – Cineplex plans to build a new location of its dining and amusement centre The Rec Room in St. John’s, N.L.
Scheduled to open in early 2019 at the city’s Avalon Mall, the nearly 30,000-square-foot dining and entertainment complex will be its seventh location in Canada and the first to open in Atlantic Canada, Cineplex said in a news release.
“We are leveraging our industry-leading entertainment, amusement gaming, food & beverage, digital media and operational capabilities to bring an entirely new, technology-enhanced experience to the community,” said Ellis Jacob, president and chief executive officer at Cineplex.
Built with the support of Crombie REIT as part of its multimillion-dollar redevelopment project, the new location will include Canadian-inspired food at a casual dining restaurant, what the company calls “eatertainment-style” dining options in the games area and a large attractions area where guest can play more than 90 amusement games. Gaming credits earned are tracked on RFID wristbands and can be redeemed for prizes at a dedicated store.
Games include air hockey, pool and ping pong and large feature attractions such as virtual reality, “luxury bowling” and axe throwing.
The Rec Room partners with the Scene entertainment rewards program.
Other elements of the gathering place include a performance space for hosting live musical and comedy acts and private dining rooms for celebrations, meetings, corporate events and parties.
“We’re thrilled to welcome The Rec Room to Avalon Mall,” said Don Clow, president and chief executive officer for Crombie REIT. “Their model of combining dining with entertainment and gamification complements the elevated visitor experience that we are creating at Avalon Mall through our redevelopment program.”
Cineplex plans to open 10 to 15 locations of The Rec Room ranging in size from 30,000 to 50,000 square feet and customized to communities. The company currently operates four other locations of The Rec Room in South Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall, Calgary and Toronto, and has announced plans for complexes in London, Ont., Mississauga, Ont., and Vancouver.
