Tim Hortons opens up “Innovation Café”

Canadian coffee-and-donut chain goes upscale

On July 25, Tim Hortons opened the company’s first-ever “innovation café,” an upscale version of the iconic Canadian coffee and donut chain.

Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, at the base of the historic Exchange Tower, the restaurant is a modern interpretation of the Tim Hortons brand and is a unique space to test new menu items and technology initiatives.

The store featured newer and more luxurious offerings than its predecessors, namely, seven different coffee-serving methods: Cold brew steeping, AeroPress, manual press, Nitro coffee, espresso and the Tim Hortons FreshBrewer.

Among the new Tim Hortons beverages is the Draft Latte which is a nitro-infused cold brew coffee layered with milk. The new location features an all-new single original coffee program that promises seasonal availability. Tea fans also saw a range of flavoured, summery teas such as nitro peach mango iced tea and blueberry lavender lemonade.


The ribbon cutting ceremony began at 7:50 a.m., with Maple Leafs own Wendel Clark signing autographs. The lineup went around the block, as the news went out that first 100 guests would be entered in a draw to win a trip for two to the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic in October. The following 200 would be entered in to a contest to win various hockey-lovers paraphernalia.

“We want Tim Hortons 130 King to become a must-visit destination for Torontonians and for guests from other cities not just throughout Canada, but around the world,” said Alex Macedo, the president of Tim Hortons. “This restaurant offers guests a new and innovative experience from the second they walk in the door.”

For those who were wondering how an upscale Tim Hortons donut selection would look like, the choices did not disappoint. From a vanilla bean custard-style filling that is piped into the crème brûlée donut just before freshly torching a sugar crust, to the brown butter and sea salt doughnut, the range offered a more artisanal feel to the menu.

“Our passion for baked goods is highlighted with our twelve Dream Donuts – each handcrafted by bakers in house. We celebrate our expertise and passion in a space inspired by our founder –Tim Horton – with hockey-inspired design unique to this restaurant,” Stated Axel Schwan, global CMO, Tim Hortons at the grand opening.
